As you get older, your body is going to begin to deteriorate. Because of this, you are not going to be able to do a lot of the things that you used to do, or things that used to be easy are going to get harder for you. You may notice that because of this, you are not able to use all of the areas in your home. Thankfully, there are modifications that can be made in order to make your home easier to get around and more livable for you. This article is going to discuss 3 of these home modifications for the elderly in more detail.

Levered Door Handles

Switching out regular door knobs for levered door handles can make doors much easier to open for a few different reasons. Levers are going to be much easier to push down and open, than a door knob is to twist and open, for someone who doesn't have full function of their hands and arms, whether this be due to arthritis, a stroke, or some other disability that effects motor skills or accuracy. Levered door handles are also much easier for those who are confined to a wheel chair to open because they simple need to be pushed downward and the the door comes right open.

Removable Shower Head

A removable shower head is also a great home modification for the elderly because it makes it so that they can shower sitting down. This is great for someone who uses a walker or some type of scoot or wheel chair. The elderly individual is going to be able to sit on a special shower chair, and then use the removal shower head to sit and wash their entire body. This is going to allow them to get as clean as they would like to be, without requiring assistance that can make them feel uncomfortable and as if they are losing their independence.

Widened Doors

Widened door frames are also important for the elderly who need to get around using a wheel chair, scooter, or walker. These widened door frames are going to allow them to get into each of the rooms of their home with ease, thus allowing them to use their entire home when they otherwise wouldn't be able to. Widening the door frames is likely going to be one of the more costly home modifications, but is going to be well worth it for the elderly person to gain access to these areas.
